Raban fulfilled his mandatory service in the RAD (Reichsarbeitsdienst = Reich Labour Service) between February and December 1942
the U-boat commanded by Burckhard Hackländer
His Accounts of Men Discharged Statement states that he "was discharged dead" on February 10
on a loop for suspension from its period original ribbon - with a paper collector’s tag attached to the reverse
